PREVIOUS EMPLOYMENT
Professorial experience:
From 6th December 2004 until 4th November 2007 Ashly was Professor of Human Resource Management based in the Department of HRM, Aberdeen Business School, The Robert Gordon University. He lectured in Human Resource Management (HRM) on the MBA and MSc HRM programmes. He is now an Honorary Professor.
His selected four journal articles for (RAE2008) census date December 2007 were: Organization Studies (2002) [impact factor 1.857], Human Relations (2002) [impact factor 1.372], British Journal of Management (2003) [impact factor 1.839], and International Journal of Human Resource Management (2005) [impact factor 0.856].
Senior lecturing experience in a research intensive university (AACSB and EQUIS accredited)
From 16th July 1999 until 31st November 2004, Ashly was a Senior Lecturer working in UQ Business School, The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia - teaching strategy, strategic human resource management and human resource management to masters and undergraduate students.
Masters programme management and lecturing experience
Prior to living and working in Australia, Ashly was a lecturer in management and Programme Director for the Exeter MBA, based in the School of Business and Economics at the University of Exeter (1st November 1996 - 14th July 1999). He taught solely postgraduate masters and diploma students.
Lecturing experience
Before joining Exeter, Ashly was a lecturer in management teaching postgraduates and undergraduates employed in Coventry Business School, Coventry University (1st September 1994 – 30th October 1996). This included teaching on the Post-Graduate Diploma in HRM which on completion offers graduate membership of the professional association of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).
Research fellowship experience
During the period September 1st 1992 – June 30th 1994 Ashly was a research fellow working full-time at London Business School on a project funded by the Leverhulme Trust. The key published outputs arising from this project include: Long Range Planning (1996), Human Relations (1998), British Journal of Management (1998), and the Human Resource Management Journal (1998).
PhD and MSc research training
(Funded by a full-time grant from the Science and Engineering Research Council)
From 3rd October 1986 until 30th September 1989, Ashly studied for his PhD thesis on management training technologies based at Henley Management College, the viva voce exam was successfully completed in December 1990 and the PhD in Management award conferred on the 11th May 1991.
Ashly completed his MSc in Intelligent Knowledge Based Systems in the Cognitive Studies Department at the University of Sussex (1st September 1985 – August 30th 1986). At that time, there were only two such courses offered in the UK. The other MSc programme specialising in Artificial Intelligence was offered at the University of Edinburgh.

Ashly is Dean – Faculty of Business and is a member of a number of committees for teaching, research and administration at BUiD. He is a member of the Human Resources Committee which has designed and introduced a new pay structure and system based on UAE pay regulations and the UK Consortium of universities following the Higher Education Role Analysis (HERA) approach. During his time at Robert Gordon University Ashly was member of a number of research committees at strategic, university, school and departmental levels. His most recent primary responsibility was developing and writing the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE2008) submission for the academics based in Business and Management Studies (UoA36). This work was completed in collaboration with an external consultant and adviser, Professor Mike Wright, Nottingham University.
